In June of 2022, The Ministry of Highways conducted a study to determine the configuration of a future interchange at Highways 1 and 56 and the alignment of Highway 56. This study identifies land to be protected for future highway improvements. Four interchange options were presented and a survey was used to collect feedback. In the survey, the public indicated safety was the most important consideration, followed by cost and benefit to area residents.
Based on the evaluation, the Diamond Interchange West of Existing Location is being recommended for the Highway 1 and Highway 56 intersection. Please follow the link below to see a diagram of the recommended design, as well as a 3D rendering. Once you have reviewed the recommendation, the Government of Saskatchewan is once again requesting your feedback through a survey. The public survey, which will gather feedback on the recommended option, will open on February 22, 2023 and close on March 8, 2023. Feedback that is gathered will be documented in the final report for consideration in future phases of design.
Highway 1 Indian Head Study – Recommendations & Survey
The Ministry of Highways has no schedule for construction of this project at this point. The timing would ultimately depend on a number of factors including rate of development, traffic volumes, safety, and funding. This study identifies land to be protected for future highway improvements. This creates development opportunities for land near the highway that is not being preserved. Next steps for this project are:
- Evaluate survey feedback
- Refine design of recommended option based on feedback
- Prepare final report
- There is currently no timeline for construction.
