“Goodbye, Old Country” is a series of three exhibition iterations curated by Robyn Jensen exploring the Dr. Martin Kovacs archival collection at the University of Regina. Dr. Kovacs studied early Hungarian Immigration to Saskatchewan starting in the 1880s. As a Hungarian descendant, Jensen navigates her journey through her familial connections within the archives and engages others with the same ties. The focus is on Kovacs’ photographs, mainly from the Kaposvar (Esterhazy) and Bekevar (Kipling) colonies. They capture the Hungarian life, navigating the new prairie landscape in celebration and struggle as new settlers, trying to hold on to their identity and customs. Jensen’s ancestors used the term “Old Country” to refer to their European life before immigrating to Canada. Once here, the settlers had to decide which parts of their “old” culture were valuable enough to pass down and which they had to say goodbye to.
